Regular reflection in self-similar potential flow and the sonic criterion

چکیده
Reflection of a shock from a solid wedge is a classical problem in gas dynamics. Depending on the parameters either a regular or a irregular (Mach-type) reflection results. We construct regular reflection as an exact self-similar solution for potential flow. For some upstream Mach numbers MI and isentropic coefficients γ, a solution exists for all wedge angles θ allowed by the sonic criterion. This demonstrates that, at least for potential flow, weaker criteria are false.

Regular reflection in potential flow and the sonic criterion
We study the classical problem of self-similar reflection of shocks at a ramp, modeled by potential flow with γ-law pressure. Depending on corner angle θ and upstream Mach number MI , either regular (RR) or Mach reflections occur. There are several conflicting transition criteria predicting the corner angle at which the type of reflection changes. We show that in some cases, in particular MI = ...

We consider self-similar (pseudo-steady) shock reflection at an oblique wall. There are three parameters: wall corner angle, Mach number, angle of incident shock. Ever since Ernst Mach discovered the irregular reflection named after him, it has been an open problem to predict precisely for what parameters the reflection is regular. Three conflicting proposals, the detachment, sonic and von Neum...
متن کاملRegularity of Solutions to Regular Shock Reflection for Potential Flow
The shock reflection problem is one of the most important problems in mathematical fluid dynamics, since this problem not only arises in many important physical situations but also is fundamental for the mathematical theory of multidimensional conservation laws that is still largely incomplete. However, most of the fundamental issues for shock reflection have not been understood, including the ...
متن کاملOn shock reflection-diffraction in a van der Waals gas
The problem of a weak shock, reflected and diffracted by a wedge, is studied for the two-dimensional compressible Euler system. Some recent developments are overviewed and a perspective is presented within the context of a real gas, modeled by the van der Waals equation of state. The regular reflection configuration and the detachment criterion are studied in the light of real gas effects. Some...
متن کاملA Free Boundary Problem for a Quasi-linear Degenerate Elliptic Equation: Regular Reflection of Weak Shocks
We prove the existence of a solution to the weak regular reflection problem for the unsteady transonic small disturbance (UTSD) model for shock reflection by a wedge. In weak regular reflection, the state immediately behind the reflected shock is supersonic and constant. The flow becomes subsonic further downstream; the equation in self-similar coordinates is degenerate at the sonic line. The r...
